Strategic Business Valuation
Do you know what your business is worth?
As business owners, we spend so much time and energy building our company that it often doesn’t occur to us to ask ourselves what it’s actually worth.
Maybe even more important is “Why is it worth what it’s worth, and what would make it worth more?” These are the critical questions that we help business owners answer with our Business Valuation service.
Why It’s Important To Understand the Value of Your Business
When talking about acquisition and valuations with business owners one thing we hear a lot is skepticism about why they should have a valuation of their business. After all — it’s worth what someone is willing to pay for it, right?
While this may be true, having more information about how potential acquirers think about the value of a business allows business owners to make smarter, more strategic decisions about how to increase that value, and put themselves in the best position for the future at every stage of their journey.
Don’t wait until you want or need to sell your business to start thinking about it — start early and make sure that you’re in the best position for success!
How Do You Determine the Value of My Business?
There’s quite a lot that goes into an accurate valuation, but our approach is built on the Transaction Comparable Method, a widely recognized technique that involves analyzing comparable transactions to determine the fair market value of your business. We find this approach to be the most effective and valuable for our clients because it relies on real-market data, providing a direct reflection of how the market values the business.
Our Approach to Valuation:
Gather Data on Comparable Transactions
First, we identify recent transactions in your industry that look similar to your business, and gather comprehensive information about the businesses and transactions.
Calculate Valuation Metrics
Using this information, we calculate a number of standard valuation metrics connecting the sale price of the comparable businesses with their core business metrics like revenue and EBITDA.
Apply Learnings to Your Business
This gives us a range of multiples that we can apply to your business to get a starting point for the valuation. Then we adjust these values based on key variations in the business, market, or positioning from the comparable transactions.
Advantages of the Transaction Comparable Method:
Market Based
Industry Specific
By focusing on transactions within the same industry, this method captures industry-specific dynamics and trends, enhancing the accuracy of the valuation.
Transparent and Defensible
The use of publicly available transaction data and widely accepted valuation multiple approaches provides a reliable and defensible assessment of value
The Commonwealth Valuation Process
Our valuation process is designed to be the perfect balance of fast, efficient and accurate — providing you the key information you need to make key strategic decisions in just two weeks, a fraction of the time required for a full Certified Business Valuation.
Day 1 – Discovery Call
The first step is to get to know you and your business. Our Discovery call will allow us to discuss your specific goals and what makes your company unique.
Week 1 – Data Collection
Next we’ll collect data on your business and industry to gain a deeper understanding on how your business and potential transaction compares to others in the industry.
End of Week 1 – Midstream Check-in
Once we’ve seen the numbers, it’s time for us to learn a bit more about what’s behind them. At this stage, we’ll talk through any questions we have, to make sure we really understand the business.
End of Week 2 – Valuation and Advisory Call
We’ll schedule a meeting, either in person or via video call for the end of Week 2 to present our valuation and talk through how we got there.
Clear, Transparent Fee Structure
Our fee structure for Strategic Business Valuations is clear and simple. We charge a one-time, flat rate fee, paid in two installments – 50% to begin the process, and 50% once we have handed over the final deliverable and wrapped up our Advisory Call.
Our fee varies slightly depending on the size and complexity of the business, but tends to be less than half the cost of a more formal, certified business valuation. We’ll give you a fixed, guaranteed price once we have an initial conversation to understand your business and needs.
